Optometrist vs Ophthalmologist: What’s the Difference?

Optometrist and ophthalmologist are often used interchangeably, but they’re genuinely different professions with different training, different scopes of practice, and different situations where each one is the right person to see.

Optometrists

Optometrists complete a specialised degree focused specifically on eyes and vision, and are the primary providers of routine eye care — vision testing, prescribing glasses and contact lenses, and detecting early signs of eye disease. Most regular eye tests, prescription updates, and general eye health checks happen with an optometrist, and for the large majority of people, an optometrist covers everything they’ll ever need.

Ophthalmologists

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who’ve completed additional specialised training in eye surgery and complex eye disease, on top of a full medical degree. They handle surgical procedures — cataract surgery, retinal treatment, glaucoma surgery — and manage more serious or complex conditions that go beyond routine care. Ophthalmologists generally aren’t who you’d see for a standard vision check or a new glasses prescription, since that level of medical specialisation is aimed at more serious conditions.

Who to actually see

For routine checks, updated prescriptions, and general eye health monitoring, an optometrist is the right starting point and usually the only person you’ll need. If an optometrist identifies something requiring surgery or specialist medical treatment during a routine check, they’ll refer you on to an ophthalmologist at that point — the two professions work together, with optometrists generally handling the wide base of regular care and ophthalmologists handling the smaller set of cases that need surgical or highly specialised medical attention. Knowing the difference just means understanding which one you actually need before booking, rather than being unsure which type of appointment applies to you.
