What Does UV400 Actually Mean on Sunglasses?

UV400 is printed on almost every pair of sunglasses sold today, but the label is so ubiquitous that most people have stopped actually reading what it means — which is worth changing, since it’s one of the few sunglass specifications that genuinely matters for eye health rather than just marketing.

What UV400 actually certifies

UV400 means the lens blocks light wavelengths up to 400 nanometres, which covers the full range of both UVA and UVB radiation reaching the earth’s surface. In practical terms, that’s effectively 100% UV protection — there’s no meaningful UV exposure a UV400 lens is failing to block. It’s a specific, testable standard, not a vague marketing phrase, which is part of why it’s worth actually looking for on the label rather than assuming any dark lens provides it.

Why UV protection matters beyond comfort

Unprotected UV exposure contributes to long-term risks including cataracts and other eye damage that builds up gradually over years, often without any noticeable symptoms until the damage is done. This is exactly why UV protection deserves real attention rather than being treated as a bonus feature — it’s a cumulative, largely invisible risk, not something you’d necessarily feel warning signs of at the time.

The dark-lens trap

Here’s the counterintuitive part: a dark lens without UV protection can be worse than wearing no sunglasses at all. Darkness causes your pupils to dilate, letting more light — including unblocked UV — reach the eye, while the lens gives a false sense of protection. This is precisely why checking for an actual UV400 rating matters more than judging sunglasses by how dark or expensive they look, since tint level and UV protection are genuinely two separate things that don’t automatically come together.
