Eyewear is a harder gift than it looks — get the fit wrong and even a beautiful frame goes straight in a drawer. That doesn’t mean it’s off the table as a gift, just that a few categories work far better than others.
Sunglasses are the safer starting point
Unlike prescription glasses, sunglasses don’t need to match anyone’s exact face measurements to be wearable, which makes them a much lower-risk gift. A classic shape in a universally flattering colour — tortoise, black, or a soft khaki — is the easiest way to get this right without knowing every detail of someone’s style.
Accessories, when you’re not sure about frames
A well-made case, a cleaning kit, or a chain for someone who’s always losing their glasses are all gifts that add real value without any risk of the wrong fit. They’re also a nice way to gift into the eyewear world for someone who already owns frames they love.
If you do know their prescription
For a partner or family member whose current glasses and prescription you genuinely know, a considered new frame can be a wonderful gift — just be prepared for it to possibly need a fit adjustment together afterwards. Bringing them in for that adjustment can even become part of the gift.
The one thing to avoid
Skip guessing on prescription lenses entirely if you’re not certain of the exact numbers. A gift voucher toward a new pair, chosen together, is a far kinder outcome than a frame that never gets worn.
