Single Vision vs Multifocal Lenses: What’s the Difference?

Single vision and multifocal are two of the most common lens categories, and understanding the real difference between them helps explain why the right choice depends entirely on what your eyes actually need, not just personal preference.

Single vision lenses

A single vision lens corrects for one distance across the entire lens surface — either near, intermediate, or far, depending on the prescription. Most people’s first pair of glasses are single vision, correcting whichever distance is genuinely affected, whether that’s clear distance vision for someone short-sighted or comfortable close-up focus for someone who’s developed presbyopia. The lens is simple and consistent everywhere you look through it.

Multifocal lenses

Multifocal lenses blend two or more corrections into a single lens, typically for near and distance vision (or near, intermediate, and distance in the case of modern progressive lenses). Rather than a single correction throughout, the power shifts gradually across the lens, so looking through different areas brings different distances into focus. This suits people who need correction for more than one distance and don’t want to switch between separate pairs of glasses throughout the day.

Which one actually suits you

If only one distance is genuinely affected — say, distance vision alone, with near vision still naturally sharp — a single vision lens is usually the simpler, more appropriate choice, since there’s no benefit to added complexity you don’t need. Once presbyopia sets in on top of an existing prescription, or when both near and distance correction are needed together, multifocals remove the hassle of constantly swapping glasses. The right answer isn’t about which sounds more advanced — it’s about matching the lens to exactly what your eyes are doing at each distance, which is exactly what a proper eye test and fitting are for.
