INDEPENDENT EYEWEAR

Shuron

Founded 1865, now Greenville, South Carolina

Shuron started life in 1865 in Geneva, New York, as an optical instrument maker before turning to eyeglasses. In 1947, vice president Jack Rohrbach invented the browline frame under the name “Ronsir” — the design that later defined the look of Mad Men and became a genuine piece of American style history.

The company is now run by Chuck Whitehill, who took it over from his father Charles. Frames are still manufactured domestically, in Florida, making Shuron one of the very last American eyewear makers that can say that honestly — a 160-year-old family business, still going.

Part of the wider world of independent eyewear — not necessarily something we carry, but always something we’re happy to talk about.
