INDEPENDENT EYEWEAR

Tokyo, since 1989
Mitsuhiro Matsuda was already one of Japan’s most celebrated fashion designers, known for blending architecture and clothing, before he launched his eyewear collection in 1989. He drew on Art Deco, Gothic cathedral detailing and Victorian-era industrial metalwork — references you can still see in the intricate engraving across every frame.
Each pair is entirely handcrafted in Sabae, Japan’s centuries-old eyewear region. Since Matsuda’s passing in 2008, creative director James Kisgen has carried the house forward, keeping the brand independently run and true to its founder’s exacting standard.
Part of the wider world of independent eyewear — not necessarily something we carry, but always something we’re happy to talk about.
