Choosing Sunglasses for Different Outdoor Activities

The perfect pair of sunglasses for a beach day isn’t necessarily the perfect pair for a long drive or a hike. Choosing sunglasses well means matching the lens and fit to what you’ll actually be doing in them.

For driving

Polarised lenses are genuinely valuable here, cutting glare off the road and other vehicles. A frame with good peripheral coverage helps too, reducing light leaking in from the sides.

For water and boating

Polarisation matters even more around water, where glare off the surface can be intense. A secure, snug fit is worth prioritising too, since a pair that shifts or slips is more likely to end up overboard.

For hiking and general outdoor activity

Lightweight frames with a comfortable, stable fit matter most here, along with strong UV protection given the extended time spent outdoors. A wraparound-style frame can help block light and wind from the sides on exposed trails.

For everyday, casual wear

This is where personal style gets to lead. A good quality UV-protective tint is the only real technical requirement — everything else, from shape to colour, comes down to what you actually want to wear.

The one thing that matters regardless

Whatever the activity, genuine UV protection is non-negotiable. Cheap, unrated lenses can actually cause your pupils to dilate in the shade they provide, letting in more harmful light than no sunglasses at all.

If you split your time across a few of these, it might be worth having more than one pair — each suited properly to what you actually need it for.
